Where your 2025 budgeted tax dollars go

44% goes to Provincial authorities and Metro Vancouver
The City of Surrey collects property taxes on behalf of other authorities. Nearly 44% of your total property tax bill is sent to other authorities.
These authorities include:
- Province of BC – funds education and provincial services
- TransLink – supports regional transit infrastructure and operations
- BC Assessment – provides property assessments across the province
- Metro Vancouver – funds regional utilities and services
The City does not control these agencies' tax rates or how they spend their funds.
56% is for City services and infrastructure
The remaining 56% of your property tax bill stays with the City of Surrey. It funds local services and infrastructure.
A major share goes to Police Services. The rest supports:
- Recreational facilities
- Parks
- Transportation networks
- Arts and culture amenities
This helps Surrey remain as one of Canada’s most vibrant and livable cities.
How we compare to other cities
The City of Surrey continues to have one of the lowest property tax rates in Metro Vancouver.

Based on 2024 Representative (Average) Single Family Detached home within each municipality per BC Local Government Statistics
Building a budget with that 56%
We create a budget (also called the financial plan) to guide how we fund City services and invest in the community.
Transparent budgeting
Every year, Surrey's financial plan is reviewed and approved by City Council and audited by independent third-party professionals. This ensures your tax dollars are managed responsibly, transparently, and in the best interest of the community.
